Nadeau, Richard Leonard #79 *

Honoured by David Nadeau and John Nadeau

Our father,

Richard Nadeau will forever be remembered as a man of action.

His life began on the move; born June 1,1931 in Flint, Michigan while his parents were there vacationing. Raised from the wilderness of the Matachewan ‘Head of Lakes’, he was the eldest boy of his 6 siblings.

An accomplished athlete in his youth, he played for the junior hockey Barrie Flyers and was a star for the 1948-49 Northern Ontario Hockey Junior B Champion Kapuskasing Lions. His playing days abruptly ended when his father David fell seriously ill, and he took charge of the family grocery store on the Circle. He proposed to our mother Jean after knowing her for only 2 weeks. They were soon married in Immaculate Conception Church on the very frosty morning of January 4,1954; 6 children were born of their loving union in the next 9 years.

His entrepreneurial acumen expanded that single grocery store into the first shopping center in the North, Kapuskasing’s Model City Mall.

With Trident Real Estate Ltd, he developed the construction of many homes, subdivisions, apartment buildings and commercial properties.

A tragic hunting accident ended his active life on November 22, 1978.

His treasure was his family, and their development remains as his proudest accomplishments. He leaves behind many fond memories of his incomparable energy and perseverance, boundless enthusiasm and an unparalleled zeal for living. We all miss you Dad.

Love

David Nadeau, eldest son

In several ways, my father, Richard Nadeau, was the type of person we all want to become.

Dad’s “joie de vivre”, contagious enthusiasm and rational approach to problems come to mind as some of the important character traits that we all aspire to develop.

His intrinsic friendly demeanor allowed him to strike up a meaningful conversation with anyone.

He also always took the time to stop what he was doing in order to give you his undivided attention when speaking to you.

I am forever grateful to Dad for introducing me to the great outdoors and I often think of him during times of solitude when fishing or hunting. We have so many fond family memories at Audrey Lake.

Perhaps Dad’s most unique quality was his ability to make his loved ones feel special on a regular basis. This is what I remember him the most for.

It is not surprising that we all look up to him and remember him with such great admiration.

In the end, the memories of my father continue to inspire me to become a better person.

Love

John Nadeau, youngest son

Narvey, Melville S. #327 *

Honoured by Dr. Larry & Carol Hoffman

I would like to honour my father-in-law Melville Narvey with this leaf. From the moment I fell in love with my wife, Carol, nearly 40 years ago, her father Mel has been a role model extraordinaire for me. The sheer joy with which Mel (known to his nieces & nephews in Winnipeg as Manny after his Jewish name ‘Mendel’) lives his life, the integrity, compassion, and honesty with which he ran his men’s clothing store, and his incredible unconditional love for his family, friends and all people are just some of the amazing qualities of this wonderful man.

He treats every person he meets with the utmost respect and receives respect in return. He is an eternal optimist; for him the glass is always half full, and he can see the positive side to everything! He has also shown incredible resiliency following the passing of his first wife Esther in 1967, his daughter Sandi in 2006 and his second wife Sooky in 2010.

He had the ‘smarts’ and personality to run and manage successfully for 40 years (with his younger brother, Harold), ‘Narveys’, an institution in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. They sold clothing and men’s wear from coveralls to tuxedos for farmers & businessmen alike. He has served as president for philanthropic organizations such as Rotary (he almost never missed a meeting). He also rose to the first principal position of the Royal Arch Masons. Today he still manages his own investments and generously supports many charities in his community!

He is a man of the ‘arts’ as well. He could play any song on the piano and slide whistle by ‘ear’. He played violin, recorder & harmonica, and sang in a Barbershop Quartet with 4 part harmony. He loves music of all kinds, especially jazz. He performed in variety and musical shows in local towns 2 – 3 times a year. He wrote poetry as well as speeches, and was asked to be Master of Ceremonies a multitude of times. He has an artist’s eye for beauty as well as a perfectly tailored and perfectly fitted suit. He loved to dance and was incredibly smooth, suave and debonair on the floor. He is always a gentleman with courtly manners which he learned in the 40’s and never went out of style for him. He had a green thumb for growing vegetables and he still has a gourmet’s appreciation for tasty food.

Even though the years have taken their toll physically (93 yrs. young in March 2012), his ability to express his love from his heart with beautifully chosen words has gotten even better. He always knows what to say and how to say it to make those around him smile and feel good. He really enjoys flattering and flirting with women (beautiful women in particular). Waitresses, sales clerks, nurses and personal support workers happily receive his special attention.

I watched him demonstrate his love and appreciation for my mother in law, Sooky, using sweet words of affection and praise, as well as a gentle heartfelt touch & kiss with effortless ease. He was playful and teasing, but just enough to make her blush and smile.

Mel tells a great joke and is a magnificent story teller. The stories seem to go on for hours. Somehow he always gets back to the main theme by the end. He tells these tales with so much enthusiasm, excitement and passion, incorporating accents, songs and so many stories within stories that we happily listen even if we’ve heard them before.

When it comes to marriage, he always says that he is the luckiest man in the world because he won the love of two wonderful women (Esther for 26 years and then Sooky for 41 years). He was head over heels in love with both and expressed this by keeping romance and love ever present in his married life. He cherishes his wonderful blended family, adores his 5 children, loves his 7 fantastic grandchildren and considers his 7 great grandchildren a true blessing.

He gets his greatest joy from seeing his family having fun together and loving each other. May we share his love and continue to give him joy for many more years.

What started out as a construction company became McLean (Murray) and Shisko (Stephen) in 1956. The company was incorporated in 1965 under the name of McLean, Shisko & Associates Limited, and operated under the name Northland Engineering until July 1970 when the name was legally changed to Northland Engineering Limited. A branch office was established in Sudbury in 1966. Offices in Thunder Bay and Timmins were opened later to provide engineering services to their clients. Northland Engineering Limited was a consulting civil engineering firm that engaged in municipal, structural, transportation, industrial, infrastructure, planning and resource management & development services for the public, industrial, institutional, commercial and government sectors. Nine of Hearts #369 *

Honoured by the Nine of Hearts Members.

NINE OF HEARTS

We ladies gathered in the winter of 1992
For quilting, knitting, gossip – just something to do
We started with five members, then thought we’d add more
We’re now at nine, but who’s keeping score?

We try each year a quilt to donate
To what worthy cause? Our standard debate
We piece together blocks that we trade and share
And hope that our quilt shows that we really care.

These ladies really need no special introduction
But I’ll highlight/relate each talent and function.

First off, there is ANNE, our “Bag” lady it’s true
She’s into antiques and glass that is blue
DIANE, motorcycle rider who has quilter “Mom”
Is computer smart and makes great cake with rum.

JOANNE, major volunteer, has heart of pure gold
Loves chocolate and purple or so I’ve been told.
Quilt stores in town have a KATHRYN “Alert”
She has “fabricaholic” tendencies, even at work.

“Guru” LOUISE-charter member- has extensive collection
For her to stop quilting is out of the question.
LYNN keeps busy organizing each and every one
Whose home? What dessert? Has project been done?

SUE, esteemed teacher and Baltimore quilt “Queen”
Her mitered corners and appliqué, the best that you’ve seen
VICKY “Thirties” fabrics and gardening keep her real busy
Add working full time, makes the rest of us dizzy.

On Wednesdays each week, we’re always together
Volunteering or quilting, whatever the weather
We’ll keep working hard till the hour – eleventh

North Bay Dental Association #2498 *

1950-2011

Water fluoridation is one of the 10 most important Public Health achievements in the
last century, resulting in a 90% reduction in tooth decay for everyone using
the municipal water supply.

Mort Fellman, Editor of the North Bay Nugget, won the Canadian National Newspaper
Award for Editorial Writing,  Canadian Managing Editors’ Conference in 1955, for his series of editorials involving North Bay Dentists, in promoting the value of water fluoridation in the
prevention of tooth decay.

Fluoridation of the municipal water supply in North  Bay began in 1962.  Today, the majority of our young adults are completely free of cavities.

In 1962, Dr. Max Back organized the North Bay Dental Association Mouth Guard
Program which has continued to today (2011).   Eight thousand custom fitted mouth guards have been fabricated for young athletes of North Bay schools since 1962.

The Dentists of North Bay and area and the local dental laboratories have volunteered their time and material at the beginning of the school year for the last 48 years to help prevent injury to the teeth of our young athletes at a minimal cost for custom made mouth guards.

Any proceeds from this project have been accumulated and used to:

Provide achievement awards to students of Canadore College Dental Programs

Provide funds toward provision of new dental equipment for dental surgical procedures in North Bay hospitals

Pledge funds to Laurentian Medical School over a five year period

A very generous donation to the MRI equipment fund at the new North Bay General Hospital in 2011
