McLaughlin, Anne #1024 *

Honoured by Patrick, Lorna, Jennifer and Jessica McLaughlin.

Anne McLaughlin grew up in North Bay and lived here all her life.  She worked at Canadore College for 20 years and enjoyed being with young people.  She had a small circle of very good friends who were there for her through the good and bad.  She loved her family, her home and her friends.  She loved the waterfront, walking its length many times, enjoying what was being done there.  She never missed an opportunity to take her nieces and nephew to the Heritage Carousel and Train.  She enjoyed the rides as much as they did.

She loved the lake and took many pictures of it at different times of day, in different kinds of weather during all the seasons.

She liked to travel but always liked coming home.

She was an inspiration to us with her indomitable spirit, her positive attitude, her outlook on life and her simple enjoyment of time spent with friends and family.

She is missed by all.

Testament

My parents were like a warm coat on a damp, cold and blustery autumn day. No, not your standard off the rack model, more so a surprisingly light and comfortable one, with a tough protective outer shell and a soft woollen lining.

I recall a certain day from my childhood … high in the open bleachers at Ivor Wynne stadium, the cold damp wind cut through me like a knife, chilling me to my very core. Seeing me shake with cold my Dad took off his warm coat and draped it over my shoulders. A little thing, yet to this day I remember. It warms me still.

My parents, Theo and Nellie Brull, came to Canada from post war Holland with their hopes, dreams and a young family in tow. This leaf commemorates their courageous journey … my warm memories of growing up in Canada commemorate the lives they lived once they got here.

Thanks Mom and Dad.

1950-2011

Water fluoridation is one of the 10 most important Public Health achievements in the
last century, resulting in a 90% reduction in tooth decay for everyone using
the municipal water supply.

Mort Fellman, Editor of the North Bay Nugget, won the Canadian National Newspaper
Award for Editorial Writing,  Canadian Managing Editors’ Conference in 1955, for his series of editorials involving North Bay Dentists, in promoting the value of water fluoridation in the
prevention of tooth decay.

Fluoridation of the municipal water supply in North  Bay began in 1962.  Today, the majority of our young adults are completely free of cavities.

In 1962, Dr. Max Back organized the North Bay Dental Association Mouth Guard
Program which has continued to today (2011).   Eight thousand custom fitted mouth guards have been fabricated for young athletes of North Bay schools since 1962.

The Dentists of North Bay and area and the local dental laboratories have volunteered their time and material at the beginning of the school year for the last 48 years to help prevent injury to the teeth of our young athletes at a minimal cost for custom made mouth guards.

Any proceeds from this project have been accumulated and used to:

Provide achievement awards to students of Canadore College Dental Programs

Provide funds toward provision of new dental equipment for dental surgical procedures in North Bay hospitals

Pledge funds to Laurentian Medical School over a five year period

A very generous donation to the MRI equipment fund at the new North Bay General Hospital in 2011
